Cup to Crown - What Are You Drinking?
Jesus’ entire mission was planned for and with the purpose of drinking from a particular cup. This cup would be the death of him, but a cup of life for us. In journeying to that cup he modeled a life that this cup would enable us to live. Without drinking of this cup we stand condemned.
This cup was a cup where people will thirst again. John 2:1-11
- Mom did not take “no” for an answer. (3-5)
- People are thirsty…reputation and pleasing others are the driver.
- He provides the drink, and it is a drink of excellence.
- They will be thirsty again.
Satisfying thirsty souls must be the right cup and at the right time. (4)
- John 7:6 Jesus refusing to go to Jerusalem.
- John 7:8 Not time yet to go to die.
- John 8:20 God protects Jesus from being killed because it was not time yet.
The cup of living water comes to those who given their hearts to Jesus. John 4:1-14
- It is a necessary cup for those who are being saved. John 6:53-54
- This living water is the Holy Spirit. John 7:37-39
- It is a cup we drink.
- Never thirst again.
- It is like a spring of water with constant supply. [Our cabin—we depend on it; Lititz Springs we marvel]
- Given unto eternal life.
The ministry of living water flowing from the spring within you.
- Mark 9:41 “Truly I tell you, anyone who gives you acup of water in my name because you belong to the Messiah will certainly not lose their reward.”
- Matthew 10:42 “And if anyone gives even a cupof cold water to one of these little ones who is my disciple, truly I tell you, that person will certainly not lose their reward.”
The cup of crowns comes at great cost. Matthew 20:20-28
- Drinking of this cup is not easy.
- Those who follow Jesus will drink this cup.
- To serve and not be served—an emptying of oneself.
- It is a cup of covenant that will cost His life for the ransom of many.
The cup of living water requires drinking the cup of covenant (blood). 1 Corinthians 11:24-26 “and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.” 25 In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.” 26 For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.”
Ephesians 1:13-14 “And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, 14 who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession—to the praise of his glory.”
Now is the time…Jesus has come to Jerusalem to drink of the cup. John 12:12-16
Do you thirst for living water where you will never thirst again? Come to the King!
- Drink from his cup giving up yourself.

Romans 10:9-10 “If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.”
- Drink anew with life from the Spirit.
Today, we remember that Jesus entered Jerusalem preparing for his crown by drinking of a cup that will be for the ransom of many. We celebrate him as king!
