Doxology
Description: Colossians 3:16 continues in giving practical, measurable, marks of what a new life in Christ looks like. As Paul describes the new, supernatural community of “The Church” he describes it as a community where the message of Christ dwells in individuals and communities, as they teach and admonish one another and they sing! God’s chosen, changed people sing to themselves, to each other, and to God.
Intro – Thomas Ken encouraged his students to sing the message of Christ in the morning, in the evening, and at night.
Context – God’s Chosen People look different and sound different, because they are different. When God chooses people, God changes people.
Let The Message Dwell – Let the message of Christ “Dwell”, or “move in” to your heart. The message of Christ is rich, and wealthy enough to pay all the spiritual and practical bills of your life. The message of the world is poor and never has enough to satisfy the price of living in you.
Teach and Admonish One Another – Teaching is bringing clarity to truth, Admonishing is bringing urgency. Encourage one another to connect head and heart.
Why Sing? – Most people consider themselves bad singers, but singing in the Bible is about a message, a community, and about God. It connects head and heart.
What do we sing? –
We sing Psalms: Scripture, words from God.
We sing hymns: Theology, words about God.
We sing Spiritual Songs: Testimony, words about what God has done.
We sing to ourselves, we sing to each other, and we sing to God.
Closing Exhortation – Deuteronomy 6 reminds us that when God’s chosen people are given new rhythms, we’re meant to pass them on to the next generation not just by teaching knowledge, but by bringing urgency and belief to the knowledge, connecting head and heart as we give testimonies of who God is and what He’s done for our community.
