Isaiah 9:6-7 “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness and from that time on and forever. The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this.”
A question to ask regarding this passage—Who will call him by these names?
- God assigned them—by his prophets, hence Isaiah’s prophecy.
- Angels revealed them—as sent ones to explain.
Luke 1:32 “He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David...”
- Man beholds them—as they see his life unfold.
Matthew 27:54 When the centurion and those with him who were guarding Jesus saw the earthquake and all that had happened, they were terrified, and exclaimed, “Surely he was the Son of God!”
Last week we learned that this child who is King is also Counselor and Advocate.
- He is helper in our time of need.
- He advocates on behalf of those he leads.
- He deals with us gently in correction, our wayward times, and when we have been wronged.
- He has us covered in that care all the time for he is with us and in us by His Spirit.
Have you beheld his counsel as wonderful?
This child will be that uniquely special warrior who protects with his power.
- Mighty (Hebrew meaning gibbor)- mighty one, mighty warrior, special guard. KMHD
- We pray to one who has power to overcome what we are encountering whatever it may be.
- We rely one who is more powerful than our powerful enemy.
- We find hope and peace knowing he is our almighty protector.
- Because of his might it ultimately affects our behavior.
This child will be THE MIGHTY Powerful Majestic God.
- God (Hebrew meaning of el)- name for God that communicates his might, power, and majesty mostly used in combination with other titles. KMHD
- El gibbor- THE Mighty Powerful Majestic God. Mighty, Mighty God.
- El Shaddai—Mighty God the Rock often translated Almighty.

Series Information
His names tell of the amazing qualities that this Christ child would embody. He is the counselor of counselors, he is one with the mighty God, eternal, and the provider of peace. The realities of his name gives greater meaning to the angels announcement of his birth "Glory to God in the highest, peace on earth to whom his favor rests."
