The Transforming Power of Hope (Colossians 1:1-8)

Reading (Colossians 1:1-8)

  • Reading the text
  • Reflection (60 seconds)

Intro

  • Introduction
  • Theme: Hope in heaven vs. earthly hope

Big Idea:

  • Learning to set our hope in God changes us

Three Main Points:

  1. Our Hope is Revealed

    • World hopes in the seen; our hope is in the unseen, revealed by God
    • Example: Paul’s transformation and gospel growth
    • Hope comes from the gospel, which was brought to Colossae by Epaphras
  2. Our Hope is Remarkable

    • Earthly hopes fade, but heavenly hope is eternal
    • Hope is centered in Christ, who is supreme, unchanging, and gracious
    • Our sins are forgiven, and our future is participation in Christ’s glory
  3. Our Hope Renews

    • Hope strengthens us in difficult situations and relationships
    • Example: Abraham’s hope in God’s promises freed him to live in faith
    • Eternal hope transforms our daily lives, freeing us to love others radically

Conclusion

  • Reflection questions:
    • Who are you called to love unconditionally?
    • Where is God asking you to take a step of faith?
    • Where is your hope—earthly or heavenly?
  • Prayer and song “Is He Worthy?”

Benediction

  • Encouragement for those feeling hopeless (2 Corinthians 4:16-18)

Series Information

When a person loses hope they lose the energy to keep going forward.  When hope is present vision, passion and strength can thrive.  Paul writes the letter of Colossians to establish a hope that never fades and will ultimately strengthen the church to fulfill its mission come what may.
