When God Speaks

CLICK HERE FOR THE LIFE GROUP DISCUSSION GUIDE CONTAINING DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

Context—Original sin, sacrifice, God.  Genesis makes it click.

Last week: In the beginning was God—pre-existent, Father, Son, Holy Spirit, the source of light that overpowers darkness. Genesis 1:1-2

Read Genesis 1:3-25

The creation story reveals our origins.

  • When God speaks things happen—completely!

  • All things come from God.

  • He is the source of life for all living things.

  • All things were created perfectly—without flaw.

Mankind has spent millions in resources and time to figure out our origins.  Why?

Knowing our origin provides a sense of purpose and significance for our existence.

  • Hope.

  • Intrigue to know more.

  • Pursuit of purpose.

Example: Ancestry- Pioneers, land settlers, preachers, scandalous, appreciation.

Pursuing origins in denial of God will only frustrate and keep pointing them to a Creator.

Astrophysicist Robert Jastrow “At this moment it seems as though science will never be able to raise the curtain on the mystery of creation.  For the scientist who has lived by his faith in the power of reason, the story ends like a bad dream.  He has scaled the highest mountain of ignorance; he is about to conquer the highest peak.  He pulls himself over the rock, he is greeted by a band of theologians who have been sitting there for centuries.

Astrophysicists, in particular, have concluded by studying the expansion of the universe that it began in a single moment and that it had a single intelligent source.

Francis S. Collins, the leader of the Human Genome Project that uncoded the DNA chaindescribes it as a envisioning the universe exploding from the very lips of God as he spoke things into existence.

Genesis 1 reveals some incredible attributes of who God is.  He is a…

  1. God of ultimate power.

  2. God of impeccable order.

  3. God of matchless brilliance.

  4. God of faultless good.

Connecting Genesis to today.

  • Do you have a grasp of who God really is?

  • Read Genesis 1 and list what it reveals about God and what impresses you about Him.

  • Look at your list and consider how this helps you and others journey life with greater clarity concerning God as Creator.

  • Consider what John 3:16 tells you about our Creator God and his view of you and others—He loves those He created enough to die for them.

  • How does Creation point to God?

Romans 1:20 “For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.”

All of Creation stands as a witness to every person’s heart that there is a God who is the source of all living things.  You will choose to either worship Him or deny Him by worshipping the creation itself.  We were designed to worship.  Let’s worship the Creator and stand in awe of Creator sending Jesus to reconcile us back to Him.

Series Information

It is not likely you can start a book in the very middle of it and be able to understand what is going on.  In the same way, understanding Jesus without having the context of Genesis would be difficult as well.  In a society that has little to no biblical context, we need to be able to convey the beginning of the Bible in a manner that would explain why we need Jesus.  This series will reconnect us with our origins, so that we can understand and communicate how Jesus can change someones life.
