CONTEXT: Paul is writing to the Corinthian church after there has been a break in relationship. The Corinthian church is very wealthy, and had originally been excited to give to the work of the Lord, but now Paul appears to be concerned they may be considering not keeping their word. Paul uses this opportunity to talk about how God wants us to give and to share how God works through our obedience.

TEXT:  2 Corinthians 8:1-12,  1 Peter 1:1-9,  2 Corinthians 9:1-8

  1. What in the sermon this week was troubling, inspiring, convicting, or confusing for you?

  2. The Macedonian church had every reason not to be giving, and even stronger reasons not to be giving to an offering that would be used outside of their church; and yet they gave with great generosity, even beyond what they were able. How does this “no excuses” approach to giving challenge you? What excuses have you used to not be obedient to God in how you use your money?

  3. Paul repeated uses the term grace to describe giving. How have you seen God’s grace and blessing in your life when you have been generous? How has God allowed you to be part of his grace to someone else?

  4. Are you overflowing with the joy of your salvation, or have the trials of life overwhelmed you and stolen your joy? Take some time as a group to reflect on the ways God has blessed you and how he has rescued you from your sin. Share your joy with one another.

  5. Read the rest of 2 Corinthians 9. What does this teach us about how God will use our generosity?

  6. What are ways you can be generous that will show the love of Christ to your Oikos?
