Texts:  Luke 6:12-16;  Luke 22:31,32;  Acts 12:1,2;  John 17

  1. Is effective prayer about quantity (how many are praying), quality (how long we pray, hard we pray) or both? What other key qualitites of effective prayer does Jesus model for us (John 17)? What other scriptures pop-up in your mind as you think about this topic?

  2. How can we begin to develop some key qualitites now missing from our prayer lives (e.g. aligning our heart to God’s heart)? How can we better partner with each other in prayer using our Life Groups?

  3. Most folks in our Oikos will welcome prayer. How can we be more creative about using the power of prayer with our Oikos, especially with those who are not yet Christ followers?

Text: Luke 6:1-11; Matthew 5 and 23

  1. Most of us dislike confrontation. When the opportunity comes, especially in your Oikos, to stand in defense of truth of God’s Word, how does Jesus’ example serve as a model for us?

  2. How does Jesus’ statement (Matthew 23) about the “spirit” v. the “letter” of the law affect us? What groups or people do you think struggle the most with this today?  Does personality type affect this?

  3. There are lots of important lifestyle issues in the church today. Divorce, immorality, lifestyle, etc.  Why does it seem that few are concerned with how much we love God since it is the greatest commandment?  What could we do to change this?

  4. Legalism can still be a problem for us. What forms does it take in the church, in our homes, in us?  How can we continue to eliminate it from our churches and our own lives?

  5. Our kids need to observe our love for God. Discuss some thoughts about parenting  to raise kids who do not struggle with legalism and understand that salvation is not accomplished mainly by obedience/being good but is by Faith and love for God?
